Choosing the Right Label Material

Before getting started with printing labels, it is important that you choose the correct material for that label. Determining the correct material type can be accomplished through assessing a few simple criteria. Should the label be permanent or removable? Will it be used in a heat application or will it be used in a high stress applicaiton? Will the label require block out? These are just a few of the many questions to consider for your next custom printed label.

Permanent or Removable Labels
Decide if the label will be permanently affixed to an object, or if at some point it will have to be removed. There are many options for both of these choices. If the label will have to be removed, make sure you choose a label that has an acrylic removable adhesive. Keep in mind that removable adhesive may become permanent after six months Permanent adhesive is more aggressive and more difficult to remove. For the most aggressive adhesive choose a rubber based adhesive.

High Stress, Heat and Stretch Resistant Labels

If the label will be exposed to high stress and heat, choose a synthetic material. Polyester is a good fit for industrial applications such as labels applied to machinery. Vinyl or a Biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) is a good choice for labels that will be exposed to different weather conditions.

Block Out Labels

If you need a label that is going to cover an image or a previous label, a block out label is what you will need. The labels are generally a paper face stock material with an opaque (black or gray in color) adhesive.
